My camera went kaplooey

I wanted to show you the progress I made on my Seraphina shawl, but my camera is acting wonky. Hubby and I are going to pull out the manual tonight and see if we can figure out what's wrong. I've gotten another 2 full sequences done (8 rows) and its gotten so much easier! Its now a subway project!!

I also made fudge last night, which came out sooo good. Also wanted to take pics of that to make you drool but my camera mojo is gone for now.

Soooo, get this...

A mass e-mail went out from a doctoral student at my grad school. As an alum, I still get e-mail from the school everyday. Anyway, this student was looking for volunteers for an experiment....errr, I mean study. She is trying to do intelligence testing on children anywhere from 6-16, but was having a hard time finding kids. Not many grad students have kids, I guess.

First thought in my head was "I know how hard it is to find volunteers...that's gotta suck."

Second thought in my head was "Hey, free intelligence testing on the kid!" Is that wrong of me? LOL

I asked Pi is she was willing to help and she was (with some convincing), so this student is coming to our apartment tonight to give Pi the WISC intelligence test. Pi knows she can stop at any time or take a break whenever she needs it. I think it'll be neat to find out just how genius my little monster is.

Oh frustration!

I decided I was going to make a shawl for my 81 year old grandmother for Christmas. At first I had chosen the Simply Soft Shawl on the Caron website and ordered 3 skeins of simply soft in grape.

Then I saw the Half Moon Shawl (Laura's version is amazing!) and thought I would do that.

But the Seraphina Shawl keeps catching my eye. I've seen a bunch of these on Crochetville lately and think they are amazing! I've read how difficult the pattern is to understand, so was very hesitant to start.

Tonight, anonymous husband was taking a nap and Little Monster was playing with barbies in her room, so I had a rare hour to myself and figured I would give it a shot. Oh frustration!

The written instructions are ok the first few rounds but quickly spiral into mass confusion (at least for me!). If it wasn't for the pictures and counting stitches, I would have given up already. But I'm stupidly stubborn, kept going, and am now on Row 12!! Woohoo!

Lemme tell you, this is no subway project!

I'm using Caron simply soft in grape and an "I" hook. I have 3 skeins of this grape and am praying that it'll be enough to finish it. So far, I love the way it looks!

I know I've got a long way to go, but I'm stoked I got this far!

Back to the 80's!

Thanks to everyone who sent good wishes my way!! Also a big thanks to Mary for the super huge, delicious cupcake with the Reese's cups on top. Yum! My day was great, even with the minor dental surgery I had in the afternoon.

Fun fact: if your dentist jams a needleful of novacaine in your upper gum REALLY high up there, your nose will go numb too. Learned that today, LOL!

In thanks for all your cyber-goodness, I'm rewarding you with a blast from the past. This is me, circa June 1986 - Kindergarten graduation. Do you notice, in comparison to my profile pic, how my half smirk/half smile hasn't changed much? LOL

I was also super productive as far as craftiness goes. I finally got a fire under my butt and finished the santa hat ornaments. I couldn't find white poms poms (no craft stores here, grrr), so I used small cotton balls and glued them on as well as possible. Whatever, they are done!

I also made a stocking for our own Christmas tree.

I made these clutch bags months ago, but never got around to lining them. Why, you ask? Because, generally, I hate sewing. Why do I hate sewing you ask? Because, well, I suck at it! Thanks to a co-worker, I can backsew well enough to line purses now, but thats as far as I can go.

Here's a pic of the lining/inside. I used the same lining as I did for my fat bottom bag. I love this lining...its thick, sturdy, and very pretty. Umm, and yes, that is my pasty arm in the corner.

Not much else going on. I'll be mailing out some Holiday ROAKs today. Nothing fancy...just some cards and a few handmade goodies for some of the ladies over at the 'ville. Is it just me, or does anyone still find the 'ville more enticing than Ravelry? Maybe I am crazy, but its still my fav place!

Screw the calendar!

You read that right...screw the calendar!

Anonymous husband and I did nothing but drink wine on Thanksgiving since little monster wasn't home. We decided that we were going to do Thanksgiving when she got back. So although Thanksgiving was supposed to be last Thursday, we said screw the calendar!!! and had it yesterday. Pi looked at us like we had lost our minds when we told her we saved the holiday until she got home.

Really, what is Thanksgiving without the person whom I am most thankful for!

I am thankful for all the stretch marks.
I am thankful for the few hours I was in labor.
I am thankful for the c-section scar that reminds me of Pi's birth.
I am thankful for every hug, kiss, and "I love you."
I am even thankful for the times when Pi drives me crazy and makes me want to pull my hair out.
I am thankful that I was blessed with such a great kid. I am humbled that she was given to me as a gift from God and that He trusts me enough to care for her.

I am also thankful I don't need to change her diapers anymore!

Check out my bird...look at that color! It was really good! We got this 18 pound bird for free through a supermarket promotion. Yep, 18 pounds! We have enough left over for dinner tonight plus enough to make turkey sandwiches all week!

I also worked on a few scarves this weekend. This one is for a girl at work. I used THIS pattern, a K hook, and Homespun yarn. Its 60" long and 8" wide. Its so fuzzy and warm...love it!

I used the same pattern and hook size on this scarf, but used Vanna's yarn instead. This one is also 60" long, but 6 1/2" wide. You can really see the pattern in this scarf since the yarn isn't nearly as bulky. I can't decide which scarf I like better.

The Christmas fundraiser is this coming Saturday. I'm working on some santa hat ornaments. Must say I'm tired of ornaments already, LOL. Laura, I think you're right. The small projects are driving me a little insane just because of the crazy amount of ends that need to be woven in.
Maybe its time Pi learned how to weave in ends. I'd be thankful for that too! :)

Holy Cow Batman!!

Ahhh, I'm back and feeling much better! Nothing brings up my spirits like a quiet night, some wine, and the company of my hubby. AND SHOPPING!

This morning, DH agreed to let me drag him to Joanns, which is over a half hour away from us. We got there by 6:45 a.m. and the place was empty! DH said "stock up" and stock up I did. I'm not even sure how many skeins I got in total, but the shopping cart was overflowing. I also got a mini tree and loads of Christmas ornaments that were half off.

The witch at the counter was trying to deny me a 20% off coupon, but I didn't give up and got to use that coupon plus a 50% off one item coupon. Booya to you cranky cashier girl!

Look at it all....drool with me. :)

I also finished some Christmas Tree ornaments for the fundraiser. Gotta say these were a pain in the be-dunk-a-dunk! I don't want to make another one of these for awhile!

Short Hiatus

Hey peeps, I'm going to be taking a short hiatus from the blogging world. I'll be back sometime after Thanksgiving. I've got alot going on and my poor crochet hook has been sitting abandoned for a few days. I think I won't get much hooking in until after Thanksgiving.

Little monster will be spending the holiday with her dad, so my plan for Thanksgiving is to sit around in my pajamas, drink a bottle of wine, and listen to moody music. That's the ticket.

Dreaming...

Yesterday was a rough day for me, so no crocheting at all. Sorry for the lack of pictures peeps.

I had a strange dream last night. I dreamt I was in my apartment alone and had just gotten out of the shower when I was attacked by a wolf. Yeah, a wolf! It was big, dark, crazy looking, and had red eyes. It was biting my arm and I was just screaming and screaming. I woke up abruptly, feeling terrified because it felt so real.

I don't normally look at dream interpretations, but I've been having these crazy emotional dreams lately and remembering them in detail. So the web dream interpretation says "A wolf in a negative situation represents hostility and aggression. It may also reflect an uncontrollable force or situation in your life."

Oddly, that makes total sense.

Hope you all have a good Monday. Thank goodness this will be a short week.

Busy Saturday

This has been a busy but happy Saturday.

First there was laundry at 10 in the morning. Yuck! LOL. Then my friend Desiree and I went to see my friend Kiki's new baby. I made a caterpillar for the baby, though it has a pig face, haha! Here it is, I call it Pigepillar! This is from KristieM's pattern over at crochetville.

All I can say is IN LOVE! This baby is the cutest little pumpkin shmumpkin ever! She has the cutest dimples, a mini mohawk (all natural), and the sweetest temperment. We were having so much fun catching up with Kiki and playing with the baby that I was nearly late for grocery bingo. Oh yeah and Kiki sent us home with the BIGGEST goodie bags ever! I mean she filled a GALLON sized ziplock with cookies and candy plus a tupperware full of a delicious greek cake.

Desiree raced me back home and off my family went (grandparents in tow) to Grocery bingo. This is a fundraiser for the school where everyone plays bingo for baskets full of grocery items. Between me, anonymous husband, little monster, and the grandparents, we had 15 bingo cards between us. Anonymous husband ended up winning the snack basket. It had 3 big bags of chips, 2 bags of popcorn, chocolate chip cookies, cheese and pretzels, chocolate covered pretzels, a box of twix candy, and other various sweets.

Kiki must have given good snack mojo, LOL. So between grocery shopping (got stuff to bake cherry and pumpkin pies, plus ice cream), Kiki's snacks, and grocery bingo, we've got enough goodies in the house to satisy the sweet tooth of a small army.

I'm pretty tired, so there won't be any more crocheting for tonight. We've still got some organizing/cleaning to do because my MIL is coming for a visit tomorrow. Send good vibes my way please.

Soley Granny Squares Hat Pattern

Here's the pattern peeps! I added a diagram for those of you that are more visually inclined. If you have any questions or find errors, please let me know!

Solely Granny Squares Hat Pattern:

Material: I hook (5.5mm) and scraps of worsted weight yarn (I used RHSS in black and white and Caron Simply Soft in pink).

Gauge: Each granny should measure about 5 inches.

Granny Squares: make 5 (this is a basic granny square)

With black, Ch. 4, join with sl st to first ch to form a loop

Round 1: With black, Ch. 3, 2 dc in ring, (ch.2, 3 dc in ring) 3 times, join with a sl st. to top of ch.3

Round 2: With pink, Ch. 3, 2 dc in corner, ch. 2, 3 dc in same corner, (ch.2, 3 dc in corner, ch.2, 3 dc in same corner) 3 times. Join with a sl st to top of ch. 3

Round 3: With white, Ch.3, 2 dc in corner, ch. 2, 3 dc in same corner, (ch. 2, 3 dc in space, ch.2, 3 dc in ring, ch. 2, 3 dc in same ring) 3 times. Join with a sl st to top of ch. 3

Round 4: With black, repeat round 3 (the only difference is that there will be more spaces between corners). Fasten off and weave in ends

Refer to diagram for placement and finishing.

You can add two smaller granny squares to the side of the hat to make a flap hat, which are really popular now.

*Feel free to sell the finished objects that you make with this pattern, but please do not sell my pattern or diagram. If you want to re-post this on another web-site, please let me know.*

Two posts in one day! :)

Remeber THIS poncho and matching headband I made for a coworker's daughter? Well she sent me a pic of her daughter in the poncho!!! Isn't she sweet?

Christmas Wreaths

Yesterday I worked on some Christmas wreath ornaments for the fundraiser. I used 3/4" plastic rings, sc all around, then ch4., sl st in next st. Easy peasy!

Big thanks to my friend Rosanna who helped me to decide how to decorate the wreaths! I wouldn't have though of threading ribbon all around by myself. Thanks Rosie!

Close up

I'm going to get that granny square hat pattern up soon..probably later today.

Granny square hat

I need your opinion peeps!

I saw a pattern for a hat made with 4 granny squares and a middle worked in the round. I didn't like that, but was intrigued by the idea of a hat made soley with grannies.

So today, I played with yarn and hook sizes and came up with this hat. I really like the color scheme but I'm not sure about the hat itself.

Do you like a hat made of granny squares like this? Would you wear something like this? Is it too bold? Be honest with me! I can take it.

Little monster and I have a very similar head size (seriously!), so I had her model the hat for me (I would have done it but my hair is a big mess and it would have been very unfair to you if I had subjected you to that kind of horror).

Here is a side view.

Here is a front view. The hat actually is supposed to be lower on her forehead, but she was being goofy and it rode up. Yeah, very VERY goofy.

So tell me what you think!

A little of this...a little of that...

I decided I needed to take a quick break from scarves and do something fast and simple. I made little hair bows. This picture is really blurry, my apologies, but you get the basic idea of what the bows look like.

I ch. 11, then dc in 4th ch from hook and across, ch.3, turn, dc across and you're done! Then I wrapped matching yarn around the middle and attached the bows to alligator clips with whipstitching and a dab of glue.

Here is what the back of the bow looks like. You can see how I wrapped the bow around one part of the clip before whipstitching and gluing to make sure it was secure.

Scarves are never far behind... I made this scarf out of green variegated yarn I found in my stash. I probably bought it ages ago, like the blue variegated. This is my own pattern. I haven't written it down, though a co-worker asked me to do so. I'll get around to that this weekend and post the pattern when I'm done.

You'd think that was enough for one night, but noooooo. I was in a groove and kept going, though now I am sorely sleep-deprived. I made a matching hat and scarf set for Little Monster with Caron Simply Soft Thick & Quick. Again, no pattern. Just stripes for the scarf and I worked the hat in rounds that weren't joined until it was the size I wanted. The set worked up really fast and it is so soft and warm!

If this yarn came in bigger skeins, I'd make myself an afghan out of it!

A hot cup of coffee is calling my name now! Happy Wednesday!

Scarf-a-palooza Part 2

My Sunday consisted of more scarves!! I'm totally tired of scarves at this point, LOL. I've got one more scarf on the hook. When that one is done, I'm taking a break from scarves!!

This one was made with a partial skein of variegated yarn that I bought YEARS ago. Probably close to when I first started crocheting. I'm not even sure what brand it is...maybe RHSS? I really like the way this scarf self-striped.

The next two are made with scraps of RHSS that I had in my stash. Told you I was into stripes lately!

I started to explore Ravelry this morning. Ravelry looks awesome, but I gotta tell you, it looks so overwhelming. I added my profile, user pic, and a handful of projects. I have a bunch more to add and also have to get my stash pics up there.
Angela, I took all the pics of my stash already...just need to figure out HOW to get the pics on there, LOL. It'll be a slow learning process for me, but I'll eventually get it.
The site is amazing and I'm so glad I got in!!

I got my invite to Ravelry today! Woooo!

I haven't had much time to explore today...have been busy, but I'll get to it soon.

Scarf-a-palooza!

I'm happy to say that I'm finally feeling better! Last night I went to bed at 9 and slept almost 11 hours! That did the trick because I'm feeling like a million bucks today.

Little monster is staying at her dad's this weekend, so I've been busy hooking. I found out that the fundraiser for Pi's school is two weeks sooner than expected! GAH! I decided this weekend would be dedicated to making as many scarves for the fundraiser as possible.

This first one is made with RHSS and no pattern. Just ch 203, and 8 rows of dc. I'm really into the stripe look lately. I'm going to have to make more like this.

This next one is made with Patons Divine and the pattern is from Christina's Crochet Haven. Boy, she's got a great name, huh? :) It's the Lacy Look Scrap Scarf. I changed it up a little bit by just adding 2 extra rows to make the scarf wider. This pattern was quick, easy, and looks really pretty when finished.

This next scarf is made with Caron Simply Soft Thick and Quick. I didn't use a pattern on this either. I ch 20, and then did dc rows until it was a length I liked. Seriously, this worked up SO fast and is VERY soft. Very very soft. Super yummy soft. Can you tell I think its soft?

Next I did a newborn sized mesh baby hat. I used the same wool yarn that I used on the hat I did for my co-worker last week. I can't remember the pattern I used, but I know it is from an adult pattern I found on Crochet Pattern Central.

Its hard to see the mesh pattern without a baby's head, so I used one of Little Monster's dolls. I'm pretty sure that I'm going to add a matching flower.

Thanks to everyone who is particpating in the Pay It Forward. The three peeps who will be getting a handmade giftie from me are Crafty Ashley, Snappish and Riohnna! Thanks for playing ladies! This is going to be fun!!

Pay it Forward

I participated in the PAY IT FORWARD on Lesa's Blog.

The way it works: I will send a handmade gift to the first 3 people who leave a comment on my blog for this post. You don't have to be a regular commenter or even a blogger member, as long as you can get me your address by e-mail.

I'm don't know what you will be getting yet, LOL, but as the rules state, you will receive it within 365 days. Most likely it will be sooner than that...like after the Christmas rush.

The only thing you have to do in return is PAY IT FORWARD by making the same promise on your blog/site. Come on and join. This will be fun if you love getting nice things in the mail.

:)

P.S. - I still feel like I was hit by a mack truck, but am slowly on the mend.

Feeling bleh

I've been feeling under the weather the last few days, so I haven't hooked much. Its just a head cold but I'm feeling very foggy. As soon as I'm feeling better and hooking again, I'll update.

Random Act of Kindness

So, I've finished the crochet pumpkin for my ROAK. By the time I got to the stem, I wasn't using the pattern anymore, LOL. I winged the stem and it came out ok. The pumpkin is pretty large and squishy. It looks lopsided in the picture but its really not, LOL. I hope she likes it! I'm also sending some old books, a Christmas ornament and a ball of Lion Brand cotton that was on her wishlist. Hope she enjoys!

Next is something else I was working on the last few days: girl's headbands. These are for Pi's school fundraiser in December. I used my own pattern...same as for the baby headband, but a bit longer...about 17 1/2 inches long.

I wear headbands alot so I was tempted to keep some of these, LOL.

Other than that, I've been plugging away at granny squares for my grandmother's afghan. I had 7 on Saturday morning and as of tonight, I have 13. Yay progress!

The knowledge that Christmas is so close is freaking me out though. I'm going to borrow rkbezzie's idea and try to do a cheapass Christmas. Its rumored that there will be no bonuses and raises at my job this year, so I've got to work with the tight budget we've got. Bezzie gave herself a specific budget. I'm not going to give myself a specific dollar amount...I'm just going to try to spend as little as possible!

This is the list I want (stress on want) to be able to make for my family for Christmas. I don't think I'll get to it all, but darn it, I'm going to give it a go. :)~

I've ordered all the yarn I need. Joanns had a coupon, plus 10% off if you buy 6 skeins, plus free shipping.

Grandpa K: a green/white swirls afghan (completed! when I got hurt in June and was laid up in bed, I took the opportunity to work this up). Total cost $10. I had alot of leftover green wintauk yarn from a football afghan I made my hubby when we were dating. The yarn had been sitting there for almost 3 years! Thank goodness, it was a no dye lot, and I only had to buy about $10 worth of matching yarn to finish it. Yay stash yarn!

Grandma E - granny square afghan. 13 squares done...7 more to go. This is being worked up in shades of red and blue. When looking through my stash yarn, I realized I had ridiculous amounts of half skeins in various shades of blue and red. Woot! I have enough blue to finish the afghan, but am running low on red. I just ordered 3 skeins. Total cost $8.37.

Grandma A: I decided on the Simple Shawl from Caron. I ordered 3 skeins of Simply Soft. Total cost $8.07.

Mom: Dot's scrap afghan (25% done but I don't know if I will bother finishing it, as we are fueding and I don't know if we'll make up by then). Also, since this is made from all my scraps, this will cost me $0!

Sister 1: a hat and scarf set. I'm want to make this with Patons Classic Merino wool. I figure 2 balls should be plenty. Total cost $9.00.

Sisters 2 & 3: a 14' ami doll for each of them. The pattern is pretty cool and they love all things ami. Looking at the pattern, I am pretty sure I can finish this with stash yarn. Another whopping $0.

Dad: hat and scarf set and maybe slippers if time permits. I'll need 2 balls of Patons wool again and use scraps for the slippers. Total cost $7.50 (i used the 40% coupon here!).

Little monster: same ami doll as sisters 2 and 3, plus store bought toys. The ami can be done with scraps. As for the store bought toys, this is what may kill my budget. I'll let you know the total when its all purchased.

Anonymous husband: he reads this blog, so I won't go into what he's going to get (Hi AH!)

So, out of all these people to make gifts for, only 1 is completely done. Yikes. Worst case scnario...everyone will get my yummy homemade fudge.

So for everyone on my list, except hubby and offspring, I have only spent $42.94 on their gifts total! Not bad!!! Let's see if I can keep this cheapass budget going!

What a day!

Well, yesterday was quite the day. First my little monster was listening to music on our computer when the desk decided to break apart. The top part of the desk, didn't just fall...it flipped over! We have no idea how that happened! Everything ended up on the floor...monitor and all. Thanfully, the monitor landed right side up and nothing was broken.

Then later that night, we decide to do laundry at the laundromat (we don't own a washer). Hubby tells me to grab the keys and I do. But like the spaz I am, I got distracted and put them down. Little monster called for me to hurry, so I rushed out the door, leaving the keys behind! DOH!

I realized my mistake right away. Hubby realized he left our back window open and had the good idea to ring my neighbor's bell and see if she will let us climb over the fence in the backyard. Our backyards are connected. If we could get into the backyard, we could get into the window and open the door.

You have to remember that we just moved here in September and our neighbors don't know us well yet. Also, this neighbor is Chinese and speaks very little English, so this is how the conversation went.

me: (rings bell)
neighbor: Who are you?
me: We live next door and...
neighbor: (cutting me off) who are you, what do you want?
me: We're your neighbors. (pointing at Pi) She's the one always dropping balls into your yard and...
neighbor (cutting me off again) BALL!
me: Yes, but I'm not here because...
neighbor (cutting me off again) I'LL CHECK!
me: No, wait!
neighbor (walks away and comes back about 5 minutes later) No BALL!
me: No, she didn't drop a ball. I'm locked out and need to climb your fence to get into my house, please.
neighbor: (after much thought) Ok, you come. (points at Pi) Not her...too little.
me: Ok.

So I go into this woman's house and into her yard. The fence is high...like at about my neck high. She hands me a chair and I try climbing over with the chair. The neighbor even tries to be helpful by putting her hands on my thighs and pushing me. Not helfpul at all but definitely a comedic moment. You had to see it, LOL!

I give up and tell her I can't get over. I ask her if hubby can try. She gives me this appraising look and pauses for a moment. Then she agrees. Thankfully hubby's climbing skills are far superior to mine and he makes it over the fence and gets us back in the house. When I thanked the neighbor, she screamed "You nevermind!" I guess that was a your welcome of sorts. So there you have my Saturday adventure!

I do have some pics to show you too.

First, I received this angel bookmark from a great lady at Crafting for a Cause as a thank you for sending out baby fleece sqaures. Isn't this beautiful? I almost never work with thread, so when I recieve things made from thread, I am just in awe!

Also, here is the diaper wrath I made for my cousin's baby. I attached the sweater and headband I made and also attached little goodies like socks, a hair clip, and washcloths. I love diaper wreaths. The baby, little Jayliana, arrived earlier this week, so she was present at her own shower. Guess she didn't want to miss the fun.

Happy Sunday!

WIPs

I still don't have any finished objects today! Boo to me! But I've got a few that are close.

I decided to ROAK a member of crochetville and feel fairly safe to post this here, as I'm pretty sure she doesn't read my blog. She asked for a crocheted pumpkin. Here is the body of one that I worked on yesterday. I still need to finish the stem, but then its all done. It was a boring pattern but looks good now that the pumpkin part is finished.

Next is the cardigan for little monster. She loved the baby sweater I did and insisted I try to make it in her size. What a challenge! I'm using a P hook and 2 strands of wool. So far, it seems to be big enough. I'm waiting on the rest of the yarn to come in from Seaport Yarn and then I can finish it. It still needs a bottom and 2 sleeves.

Right now, it looks like a bad vest, LOL.

Happy All Souls Day! Today we remember the souls who have passed on...particularly the ones who are still in Purgatory. Today, I remember my Titi Abigail. May she be rejoicing in the beauty of heaven!

Happy All Saints Day!

To those of you who don't know what All Saints Day is, here is a little paragraph from New Advent.

"All Saints Day: Solemnity celebrated on the first of November. It is instituted to honour all the saints, known and unknown, and, according to Urban IV, to supply any deficiencies in the faithful's celebration of saints' feasts during the year. "

Some of my favorite saints are The Blessed Mother, Saint Terese (she actually answered my plea for help on making an important decision with roses once...it was amazing!), St. Clare, St. Francis of Assisi, Blessed Kateri (my Pi was born on her feast day!) and St. Gianna Beretta Molla...she really has a special place in my heart!

Last night, Little Monster went trick of treating with her dad and brought home a pumpkin full of candy. She looked adorable and had fun. Sorry for the lack of pictures today...I don't have any FOs at the moment to show. I've got at least 4 WIPs though, so hopefully new FOs and pics to come soon.

Happy Thursday!
