But, that left 6 pinwheel blocks on my sewing table for the last few months. I wasn't sure exactly what to do with them, so they were just sitting and waiting for inspiration. Then my friend Joyce told me that her mother was collecting handmade blankets for the NICU at Staten Island University Hospital. She's originally from Staten Island, so she's got a soft spot for the hospital.
The NICU gave me the perfect reason to use up those blocks and I love knowing that they're going to good use! I split the blocks up to make a boy quilt and a girl quilt. They each measure 20"x28", which is what S.I.U.H. requested.
I used yellow fleece as the backing and it made the quilts super soft and cuddly.

Wonderful! And don't you feel good?!!! I always feel good when I finish a little something for one of the hospitals. Love using my stash for projects like these.
I love the fleece backing!! Clever! Do you machine quilt them? Is that a PITA w/the fleece backing? What kind of thread do you use? The Beast isn't very good at machine quilting and I think it's the thread I'm using...
What a wonderful idea!
those are lovely! I know the recipients will truly appreciate them!
So pretty! Your sewing and quilting skills have gotten quite impressive!
My daughter spent two weeks in the PICU at Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital (here in Cleveland), when she was 3 weeks old, with a massive respiratory infection, that nearly killed her. It was such a difficult time. I would have loved receiving a quilt like that for her when she was sick. I know the parents of the babies who receive those quilts will cherish them.
These are lovely! And also for a great cause.
Darling, they will be cherished!!!
I know this is an older post, but I was looking up info on this program. In 2002 my son spent over a week in NICU, and we had a quilt, that we got to take home. It was one of the most meaningful gifts we got for him, and we don't even know who made it. It meant so much to us, and I am glad to hear they still do it.
